The electoral management body, the Electoral Commission, has warned political parties to refrain from declaring election results prematurely.

According to the President of the Commission, Jean Mensa, the electoral management body plans to declare the certified results within 24 hours.

“By law, the Electoral Commission is the only body or institution with the power and authority to declare presidential and parliamentary results. Therefore, I warn all interested parties, especially political parties, to desist from declaring results. We have indicated our intention to declare certified final results in a timely manner, and we will do so with God as our helper. Therefore, we called on all our stakeholders to be patient and let the Electoral Commission fulfill its functions, ”he stated.

Ms. Jean Mensa made the disclosure at a press conference on Sunday, December 6, 2020, before the general election.

Meanwhile, the EC has revealed that it registered an electoral turnout of 87.8 percent in the special voting exercise that just ended.

The development comes after security personnel, EC personnel, and journalists across the country cast their votes ahead of the main exercise that begins Monday, December 7, 2020.

On Monday, December 7, Ghanaians will cast their vote in general elections to elect a president and 275 members of Parliament in 38,622 polling stations in the country.

The exercise will begin nationwide at 7am and end at 5pm on Monday.
