The Upper East regional secretary of the largest opposition party, Donatus Akamugri, has said the late former president Jerry John Rawlings should not be buried until the party he founded, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), returns to power.

At a vigil in honor of the late military leader in Bolgatanga, Mr. Akamugri said: “Rawlings must be buried when we are in power.”

According to him, “if he had wanted to be buried, then he should have been called to eternity before the election period”, yet “we had three weeks to go for the election when he died, so his soul will not rest in peace if we have to bury him when the elections approach ”.

“And he was eager to cast his vote for his party and once he’s passed away and the elections haven’t been held, we think he wants us to win the election and bury him.

“If we stay with us, if we don’t win the election, Rawlings is supposed to hold on until the NDC comes back to power and then we’ll bury him,” he told the audience at the vigil.

“And surely,” he added: “This election, we will win it because, in the spirit of Rawlings, with the way that he has contributed to this country and the people watching what he has done and even his opponents now call him an angel. , they would do him an honor so that his party would return to power and then they would bury him ”.

“So we call on everyone in this country, including members of our party and those who are paying tribute to Rawlings as a good person, to pay the best tribute to him by making sure that the NDC wins the election and then, your party. it will be in power and it will bury it. That is when he will come to his Creator without any hindrance or harm to him, ”said Akamugri.

Rawlings passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020 while admitted to Korle Bu University Hospital.
