Donny van de Beek has had a rather turbulent start to life at Manchester United, following his £ 35 million move from Ajax.
Much has been made of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reluctance to throw the Dutchman down the deep end, and there has been real ire directed at the Norwegian for not being Van de Beek’s starter in the Premier League.
But interestingly, none of the outrage directed at United’s handling of the midfielder comes from Van de Beek himself. Rather, it’s the people around you.
Ajax legend Sjaak Swart, who is an advisor to Van de Beek, was the first person to speak about the midfielder’s situation, saying: “A substitute; I don’t like him at all.
“I couldn’t do it, I came in with four minutes to go. He would have to leave me on the bench. But I must say he still did three good things.”

“And the penalty, where the winning goal came from, came from him. He did well in that couple of minutes. But normally they should have lost 7-1. Brighton hit the post and the crossbar five times.
“They [Brighton] We have a good team, but that shouldn’t happen to Manchester United. “
This was followed by former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, who called Van de Beek’s absence against Chelsea a “mystery”.
“He doesn’t seem to be at the forefront of Ole’s plans in every game,” Neville said.
“It’s a bit of a mystery that one. The more he doesn’t start, the more he doesn’t show up, well, a 40 million pound player, normally you bring him into the team.
“He must be thinking, ‘What am I doing here?’ at this moment in time. “
Former United left-back Patrice Evra took a step further and said: “We’re talking about Van de Beek … why did we buy him?
“I have nothing against the boy, but why did we buy Van de Beek? He is watching the game from the stands every game because we don’t need him.
“That’s the truth, but people won’t say it out loud.”
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink agreed with the Frenchman’s statement, adding: “You are correct. He is an attacking midfielder, his strength is to get into the area and reach the end of things and score goals or create similar [Bruno] Fernandes.
“If he has to compete with Fernandes he’s not going to play, right?”
Nor is it just ex-professionals with a link to Manchester United who have weighed in on the issue, with two of Van de Beek’s compatriots fighting in his corner.
Marco van Basten was the first to speak, telling Rondo: “Donny shouldn’t have gone to Manchester United. When you’re a good player, you want to play every week.
“It’s really bad for a player like Donny to only play six or seven games this year. That’s shocking for your game rate.
“I know he is making a lot more than he used to. But, as an elite player, you have to be critical and consider your chances of playing when you sign for a new club.
“Donny should have waited for better prospects and signed for another club.”
And then Rafael van der Vaart came on stage and said to NOS: “Wait? Patience? Would you like to get stuck in the bank?”
“The players in front of you can’t even kick a marble and [Solskjaer] it still doesn’t put you on the team. I wouldn’t be happy. I certainly wouldn’t be enjoying my football there.
“Look at the player Donny is and how he performs internationally. I wouldn’t allow it.”
After digesting all of this, it appears that Van de Beek is not happy with United and that the transfer is nothing short of a disaster.
But Van de Beek, for the most part, has kept his cards close to his chest.
He admitted that it is frustrating to watch the action from the bench and would undoubtedly rather help his team on the pitch, like any footballer, than play the role of a mere spectator at Old Trafford.
But admirably, the 23-year-old has ignored the debate around him and kept his head down.
The international break is currently in full swing, with national football on hold until Saturday, November 21.
Van de Beek represented his nation the Netherlands in a friendly with Spain on Wednesday, and found the back of the net in a 1-1 draw.
After the match, Van de Beek set out to find his Manchester United teammate David de Gea, who was not in the contest, to exchange shirts with him.
The gesture speaks volumes about United’s Van de Beek’s thoughts, and confirms that despite the noise around him, he’s happy where he is and with the decision he made.
Manchester United also joined in confirming to fans that there are no issues when it comes to Van de Beek on Saturday morning.
By posting a picture of the Dutchman on Twitter, along with his recent comment: “I’m really enjoying being at United. It’s a nice team. They’ve welcomed me very well and everyone has helped me,” wrote the Red Devils: “Donny se feel at home! ”
