Residents of Doggoh in the Jirapa Township of the Upper West region have lamented the lack of electricity in the community, saying it has negatively affected their livelihoods.
They say that it is difficult to participate in any economic activity such as the sale of refrigerated food such as frozen fish and water to obtain income that helps improve their living conditions.
Ms Regina Bafuuro, a resident of the Doggoh community, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in the community that the lack of electricity is affecting her business.
“I am a business woman, I prepare whistle to sell but how to grind Guinea maize to prepare whistle is very difficult. I have to go to Babile or Jirapa to grind, but those places are also very far from here. It is affecting my business, ”he explained.
Residents also say their children sometimes have to sleep hungry due to the lack of electricity in the community to grind corn and prepare food.
They pointed out that women have to travel several kilometers to access a mill in Jirapa or Babile to grind their grains to feed their families.
Mr. Francis Borwuoh, another community resident, said the lack of electricity was also affecting the education of his wards.
He noted that they were unable to study or do their homework at night, saying it is lagging behind their academic performance compared to their counterparts in other communities with electricity.
“Our children who attend secondary school in Kunzokalaa cannot compete with their colleagues.
“When the master asks them to prepare for a test, the Kunzokalaa will prepare very well because they have lights, but the Doggoh cannot prepare because there is no light here,” Borwuoh explained.
Therefore, the people of the Doggoh community have appealed to the Jirapa Municipal Assembly and the government to provide electricity to the community to help improve their livelihoods.
This, they say, will also help improve education in their neighborhoods and facilitate community development.
Meanwhile, Assemblyman of the Kunzokalaa Electoral Area, Mr. Stephen Salia Dasaa, says that the Doggoh community is one of the Jirapa Township communities destined to benefit from the Rural Electrification Project.
However, he added that the contractor in charge of the project has not yet informed the project site, but was following up with him to start the project as soon as possible.
