Dog meat vendors in Sandema in the Alto Oriente region’s Builsa Norte municipality were disappointed when they visited the area’s main market to buy dogs and prepare for their customers.
When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sandema visited the dog market on what turned out to be a market day in the municipality, they observed that the normally full market was deserted.
However, there were other animals such as sheep and goats for sale.
Dada Bee, a popular dog meat vendor in Sandema who expressed concern about the situation, told the GNA that “I went to the dog market this morning around 0900 hours and realized that there was only one dog for sale. in the market.
“We were six dog meat vendors in the market at the time, all haggling to buy the dog. I was able to buy it because I offered to pay GH ¢ 185.00 for what I normally would have bought for GH ¢ 140.00 ”.
Dada Bee explained that it was market day and that she couldn’t afford to disappoint her customers, who usually flocked to her house to buy their favorite delicacy before noon.
He said that the situation had forced him to raise the price of meat, “Before I sold the dog’s thigh for GH ¢ 25.00, but now I sell it for GH ¢ 30.00, the neck that I used to sell. GH ¢ 18.00 or GH ¢ 20.00, now it costs GH ¢ 25.00 “.
He said some customers who were aware of the shortage were comfortable with prices, while those who were unaware were still negotiating for the old price.
“Although some customers will initially complain about today’s prices, when I tell them the situation, they understand and buy at the price I offer,” said Dada Bee.
Dada Bee and her colleagues could not give the exact cause of the shortage except to jokingly say “People have eaten all the dogs.”
Dog meat vendors generally move from house to house to buy the animals and also travel to other markets such as Fumbisi, Yagba and Kubori markets to shop.
“During the past week, all the markets could not give us the figures that we usually buy, so the demand for meat has risen more than we can supply,” they said.
Mr Abdulai Arimeyaw, a butcher, told the GNA that “I deal with sheep and goats, but we were all surprised this morning when we arrived and realized there was a shortage of dogs in the market.”
According to him, there was a general shortage of all the animals on the market, which caused a rise in prices. “Now, unless you have GH ¢ 200.00 or more, you won’t get a sizable goat or sheep, which used to sell for GH ¢ 150.00 to buy. I came and couldn’t buy any, so I’m going home. “
Due to the shortage of dogs in the market, most vendors slaughter pigs for their customers, while others close their joints.
The delicacy is usually served with powdered dried bell pepper and chopped onion depending on the buyer’s choice, and is a favorite of many residents of Sandema and the surrounding area.
One of Dada Bee’s customers who was sitting at the store buying their favorite piece of dog meat while it was on fire said, “I ran here from my office to buy the meat and back. I heard this morning that there was a dog shortage in the city.
“But despite the shortage, I knew that Dada Bee will not disappoint its customers. The only problem is that the shortage will affect us because meat prices will definitely go up, ”he said.
