The Electoral Commission (EC) has asked the general public to ignore what it says is misleading information regarding reports describing the burning of ballots.

In a statement issued by the Election Commission, Accra-based Joy News published a story in which an agent of the Democratic National Congress accused the EC of burning ballots destined for the upcoming elections.

The Electoral Commission, in response to the complaints, explained that seven local printers were contracted to print the ballots for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

“After such a massive printing exercise, there are always wasted or damaged ballots that are shredded by each printing press in the presence of the Political Party agents,” the statement said.

“These shredded ballots are burned in incinerators along with the plates bearing the design of each ballot. It is important to highlight that the burning is carried out in incinerators owned and located within some printing companies such as Buckpress and in public incinerators if the printing company does not have such a plant, “he added.

The Electoral Commission also clarified that the agents of the Political Party located in the press are notified about the exercise of shredding and burning wasted ballots.

“As part of the process, they are required to sign a consent pledge. This is a routine process that has been under way in the Electoral Commission and this is not new ”, clarified the Electoral Commission.
