The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Responsibility (ASEPA) has called for the removal of special prosecutor Martin Amidu on charges of incompetence.
The group’s executive secretary, Mensah Thompson, said a number of questions emanating from the special counsel team raise questions about his incompetence.
“In fact, since 2018 we have not seen a single productive investigation conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office or a single productive prosecution conducted by the Special Prosecutor’s Office, so why do we continue to keep Mr. Amidu in his place,” he said.
Martin Amidu took over as Special Prosecutor in February 2018 from President Akufo-Addo.
His appointment was to ensure independent and non-partisan investigations of corruption cases, as well as to prosecute all those found guilty of corruption in the country.
However, after two years in office, ASEPA says that the Special Prosecutor has been inactive in the fight against corruption.
He added that, according to the law established by the Special Prosecutor’s Office, Mr. Amidu cannot be removed or changed, hence the need for the President to come and ensure his retirement.
“Because your stature is like that of a Superior Court judge, or a Court of Appeals judge, the Article 146 process can be invoked to initiate an impeachment against you, if the presidency feels it needs to remove you. , and that’s what we want, ”Thompson said.
