The Government of Ghana’s National Market Disinfection Initiative in partnership with waste management experts Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) overseen by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) has covered markets and streets in Bolga Municipality .

The municipal executive director of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, Aminyuure Joseph Atura, has expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, as cases of the COVID-19 pandemic have increased again in the country.

“This disinfection exercise conducted by the government of Ghana in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited is doing a lot for the market women in Bolgatang, most of the time when the markets are disinfected, it goes beyond Coronavirus to also kill germs, pests and other disease-causing agents likely to live on the market, “he said.

He added that the mode of transmission of the coronavirus is complicated, so it needs a comprehensive and aggressive response like the one the government is currently undertaking.

“We are all aware that the virus, as we know it, can be contracted through physical contact. Just as people are in the market doing their business, people with Covid-19 are also in the market and could easily transmit the viruses if living traces of them are kept on surfaces in the market, which makes the exercise very vital. Anyone in the market and doing business could come into contact with the virus, so it is best that this exercise of disinfection is being carried out to stop the possible situations that probably exist within the market, “he said.

He emphasized that he has helped the municipality in the sense that the cases as they are are zero in the municipality. “The last three cases that we previously registered have been recovered and have been discharged,” he added.

However, he was quick to add that some samples have been sent for testing and the results have not yet been released, so as it stands, the Bolga municipality does not have a case.

Commenting on the second wave of the Coronavirus and what the municipality is doing, he noted that initially, the health ministry used to be on the border between his district and the Talensi district where people were examined when they entered the municipality. But over time, he indicated that it was clear that there were no serious cases so we stopped.

“Now that we are having the second wave that we are seeing in the country where there are increases in terms of COVID-19 cases, we will need to redouble our efforts in that direction. That is why I have held a meeting with my municipality of health director and we are thinking of making sure in the best way that we can take some samples in terms of taking some temperatures, but if you look at this seriously, we do not have any serious cases of Covid 19 and I and my municipal director make sure to make sure people are on their noses all the time and make sure that we at least have some social distance and people are using their disinfectants frequently, ”he emphasized.

Hajia Hawa Ninchema, Municipal Executive Director of Bawku Central, for her part, expressed her sincere thanks to the government and Zoomlion on behalf of the Central Municipality of Bawku.

“It has been very helpful for us. It has helped us all in the municipality. The first and second exercises killed many mammals. After the disinfection exercise, a massive cleaning exercise was carried out,” he said.

Regarding the measures taken against the spread of the virus in the area, he hinted that the protocols will continue to be followed, ensuring the use of a nasal mask, the use of disinfectants and also the education of community members to raise awareness about the Pandemic.

“We will educate people that the coronavirus pandemic still exists. Together with my health officials, we will embark on an awareness program and will also expand our contact tracing efforts, “he reported.

The third phase of the disinfection exercise in the region started on Saturday, November 14, 2020 from the former Bolga market via Paga, Navrongo and Bawku markets.
