Protest #EndSARS: We will not allow anyone to disturb the peace of our nation - Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has described the long-awaited speech by President Muhammadu Buhari on the protests that shake the nation, as disappointing and completely disconnected from the reality of the tragic events in our country in the last two weeks.

Revealing this in a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, National Secretary for Publicity, the party called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to remain calm and allow a return to normal life in the collective quest for coexistence. peaceful in the general interest of our nation. .

Read the full statement below:

Mr. President’s speech, in the face of witnessed turmoil, riots and murder of young Nigerians, is, to say the least, depressing and failed on the empathy test.

Our party, and indeed all peace-lovers in our country, were shocked that Mr. President overlooked the immediate trigger for violent protests: the widely condemned murder at the Lekki tollbooth by security officers, a A situation that created global concern and drew the world’s attention to the human rights abuse that is taking place in our country under their supervision.

Also painfully, Mr. President, as Commander-in-Chief, was silent on the Nigerians’ demand for an investigation into the military’s involvement in the gruesome massacre.

Unfortunately, the long-awaited speech did not inspire any hope. It failed to address the unrest, widespread hopelessness, drift toward anarchy, and failed to provide concrete steps on how to stop the situation and control the bandits, thugs, and vandals who unleashed violence against peaceful protesters and innocent Nigerians.

In summary, from the letters of the speech, there were no correlations between the fundamentals of the crisis situation that we have witnessed and the much sought-after reaction of the President.

Furthermore, the Nigerians had hoped that Mr. President would lead the much-needed review of our security architecture to meet demands for professionalism and respect for the rules of engagement.

Nor did Mr. President seize the opportunity to further heal wounds and inspire hope by outlining a roadmap to open up the economy in a way that enables our abundant young workers to pursue their productive goals and address the problem of widespread hunger. on earth.

However, in solidarity with Nigerians and in honor of the victims of the Lekki Toll Gate assassination, our party has mandated that our flags in all of our offices across the country be flown at half mast for a period of one week, starting Friday in October. 23, 2020.

The PDP urges all men and women of good faith to join forces to pray for our country and work for solutions and a peaceful resolution of the crisis that seeks to engulf our beloved nation.
