Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will remain under pressure if Manchester United’s form does not improve, and the club will be forced to act sooner or later, former striker Dimitar Berbatov has warned.
And Berbatov acknowledges that calls for former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to replace Solskjaer will only intensify if there is no quick fix in United’s results.
United were humiliated 6-1 at home by Pochettino’s former club Spurs on Sunday with questions about Solskjaer’s future, despite finishing third in the Premier League last season.
The Norwegian team has accumulated just three points in its first three games and is 16th in the table.
Berbatov, who also played at the helm of Spurs, believes Solskjaer is still suitable for the role, but recent reports have claimed United has already contacted Pochettino to sound out the Argentine about the position.
And Berbatov told Betfair: ‘Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has received some criticism recently, I can understand why the odds are that he is the manager most likely to leave his post, especially if they continue down this path.
The pressure on him will only continue to grow, and if they continue not to score points, the time will likely come when action is taken.
“I think he’s still fine for the job personally, and we’ll have to see.
“For me, it is incredible that Mauricio Pochettino is available for this job, one of the best coaches in football in my opinion.”
Pochettino has been out of work since he was fired by Spurs 11 months ago and is awaiting his next management challenge.
But Berbatov also warned that Pochettino could also struggle to live up to the huge levels of expectation if he becomes the latest coach tasked with resurrecting the glory days.
“You can say that maybe he waited for this job, but it is very risky for a coach, and I cannot believe that another club has not hired him,” Berbatov said.
Pochettino may be “the man”, but at some point, they were all “the man”: (David) Moyes, (Louis) van Gaal, (José) Mourinho, they were all the next savior at one point.
For United fans, I would say that everyone connected to the team is in some way suffering. The ones who will express their feelings the strongest will be the fans, and I can understand this.
“United is run by people who want the club to succeed, and the glory days will return, there is no doubt about that, only when will that be, is the question.”
