Sergino Dest has expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to be on a field with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Champions League draw pitted Barcelona against Juventus in the group stage, and Dest can’t wait to test himself against the best.
“It will be a special moment to play with Messi against Ronaldo,” he told beIN Sports.
Dest just arrived in Catalonia at the beginning of October, but he shared his joy at meeting his new teammates and being part of such a historic club.
“Last Friday, after the game against Celta de Vigo, I was able to meet all my new teammates, including Messi,” said the 19-year-old.
“It was a very special moment.
“It was a dream come true [when I knew Barcelona were interested].
“I always wanted to play here.
“They called my agent and then my agent called me.
“When I knew they loved me, I made a decision.
“I love challenges and that’s why I chose to come here.
“I want to play at the highest level and grow as a player.
“I hope I fit in here.”
Dest was also followed by Bayern Munich over the summer, but decided to move to Catalonia and is now eager to emulate the exploits of Dani Alves.
The Brazilian right-back was key to the successful Barcelona teams of Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique, and Dest believes he can be equally effective in a team that prioritizes possession and attacking football.
Dest has a language barrier to overcome at his new club, but it is understood that he speaks Dutch with Frenkie de Jong, who has helped him establish himself in his new environment.
Dest is the first American to play for Barcelona and hopes he will inspire others to follow in his footsteps.
“I hope it motivates other American players to work hard and think that one day they can end up at a club as big as this,” he said.
