Sergino Dest aims to learn from the best in the business in Barcelona. The 19-year-old full-back signed for the Catalan giants in the last week of the transfer market and has already made his first-team debut with Ronald Koeman’s side.
Many young players move to the Camp Nou to work alongside some of the best players in the world, such as Lionel Messi, and Dest was without a doubt one of them.
“I like challenges,” Dest told reporters this week.
“I will develop in this club because I will see what I have to improve more.
“It’s a great challenge, but that’s what motivates me, playing with the best in the world. It’s something I really wanted and dreamed of.
“I think I should take the opportunity to learn from these players. The best in the world is here, Messi, and I can learn from them.
“I feel that if you are in Spain, it is easier to learn Spanish. So if I am with the best players, it is easier to develop.”
The first american
Dest is the first American international to have played for Barcelona in LaLiga Santander.
“I don’t feel the pressure in a bad way, but in a good way,” added Dest.
“I am the first American to be on the Barcelona team, so I am very proud of that.
“But I don’t just want to be first, I want to do something great at this club as well. I will work hard for this. I want to achieve great things at this club.”
To play for the US national team, the defender turned down the opportunity to represent his native Netherlands, which was coached by Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman.
“It wasn’t awkward at all,” Dest said about it.
“At the time I chose between the Netherlands and the United States, I told him honestly that I didn’t want to play for the Netherlands and that I wanted to continue playing for the United States.
“It’s not his fault or something, so we have a good relationship.
“After a while, he called my agent and asked if there was still a chance that you could play here, and I was definitely willing to play at this beautiful club, and when we first met after that, it felt natural. “
