Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Energy designate, has admitted that the words he used to describe Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as a “disgrace” and a “disgrace” as Minister of Education in the John Mahama administration they were tough.
The former minister said the words used were not for the person of former president John Dramani Mahama’s running mate, but her performance as minister.
He made these comments when asked by North Tongu MP Okudzeto Ablakwa if he had made the comments and he replied yes.
According to him, the former minister had claimed that the PNP government did not have a policy document on SHS for free, but today it came to light that she was the one who initiated the policy.
This, he noted, prompted him to comment.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh had stated that “her four-year tenure with John Mahama was a disgrace”.
In a radio interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen political talk show Tuesday afternoon, the Manhyia South constituency member of parliament said that Professor Opoku-Agyemang as minister left the education sector with the following debts according to delivery notes from Mahama’s own administration:
Food grants for colleges of education: GHS 36 million
Food Grants for Special Schools – GHS 4.7 million
SHS Grant – GHS24 million
Progressively free upper secondary school debt: 33 million GHS
Capitation grant, GHS8 million
GETFund debt – GHS3.7 billion
“She doesn’t understand education,” said Dr. Opoku Prempeh.
He was asked if he regretted making the comments and he answered yes and apologized.
He said he never said anything against the person of the professor.
“I’m sure the words are harsh and I apologize,” he added.
