Derby owner shuts down rumors that boss Phillip Cocu will be replaced by Rooney – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Score, Results

Derby owner Mel Morris insists Phillip Cocu will keep his coaching job even if his team loses to Watford on Friday.

The Dutchman is under pressure after the Rams lost three of their first four Championship games, although Wayne Rooney’s last win at Norwich before the international break gave him some breathing space.

A report Thursday indicated that Cocu would be fired if Watford wins at Pride Park, with player and coach Rooney, who has been at the club for 10 months on an 18-month contract, taking the reins. But Morris claims that Cocu is safe for the moment.

When asked if Cocu would still be the Derby boss in the event of a Watford win, Morris told talkSPORT: ‘Yes, absolutely. We are not even close to discussions of that kind.

‘Yes, he (Cocu) is under pressure, but he himself feels that pressure, it is not the pressure that we are increasing on him. The pressure we are talking about is that we need better results. The best results come from better performances.

We are very confident that we have the right plans to turn things around. There is no guarantee in football.

“Everybody wants good results, but we have a good understanding of what is behind some of the results we’ve had so far, and we’ve had a lot of discussions about that. He has had many meetings with the team and the rest of the coaches. ‘

Rooney is known to want to move into management and since joining the Derby, he has been working on and off with Cocu and his coaching staff.
