Kamil Jozwiak celebrates after scoring his first goal since joining Derby in September

Wayne Rooney’s promising start to life in management continued as Derby County toppled Swansea City for their first home win of the season.

The Rams remain in the bottom three in the championship on goal difference despite extending their unbeaten streak since Rooney was named interim head coach to six games.

But this was a performance full of promise, as Derby edged out a Swansea team that is generally tough to beat.

Colin Kazim-Richards set the tone for the night by putting Derby ahead from close range early on and a resounding first Derby goal from Polish international winger Kamil Jozwiak doubled the hosts’ lead before the break.

Swansea improved somewhat after the break, but never seemed to deny Derby a first victory at Pride Park since beating Reading 2-1 on June 27.

It was the second win on the bench for former England captain Rooney, and he will have made his chances of landing the coaching job permanently without any damage.

This was a meeting of the team that started the night as the EFL’s meanest defender, Swansea, and a Derby team that were the lowest scorers in all three Football League divisions before the game.

However, the proof that statistics don’t always count for much came after just three minutes when Derby took the lead.

The goal was soft from Swansea’s point of view, with a free kick by Graeme Shinnie assisted in the area by Lee Buchanan.

Kazim-Richards reacted quicker, getting between Connor Roberts and Freddie Woodman to score his second Derby goal.

The first match was a sign of things to come, as Swansea worked on possession and couldn’t compete with a home team that showed much more energy and purpose.

Derby nearly doubled the lead in 20 minutes when the Swansea Woodman goalkeeper pushed a 25-yard shot from Jason Knight to the post.

A team that had scored just eight goals in the championship throughout the season prior to this match deservedly scored their second of the night before the break.

A good move allowed Knight to send a deflected cross that landed on the one named Martyn Waghorn. His firing found Jozwiak, who gave him a sweet touch to get him into space before launching a left-handed shot past the defenseless Woodman.

Derby was nothing like a team that had gone so long without a win in its own patch, while Swansea was unrecognizable from the team that beat Cardiff City last Saturday.

Things almost took a turn for the worse for the visitors in a corner just before half-time, but Kazim-Richards’s powerful header shot off the crossbar.

Swansea tailsman Andre Ayew waits to start after Derby’s second goal completed a miserable first half for the visitors.

Cooper’s response was to make three changes and change formation at halftime, and Swansea at least competed in the second half.

However, although Derby had to defend a bit, Swansea did not create a notable opportunity, as they lost the opportunity to climb to third place in the table.

For Rooney, a fourth clean sheet in a row completed a good night’s work.
