Krystian Bielik’s instinctive finish provided Wayne Rooney with a first win since becoming permanent manager of the Derby and rare positivity for those involved at Pride Park.
The Derby is a club that is currently clouded by uncertainty: Players and staff went unpaid last month, prompting a transfer embargo and the two-month ‘almost completed’ acquisition deal is on the brink of collapse.
However, things improved on the field when they added Bournemouth’s scalp in search of promotions to the previous two of the championship’s best, Norwich and Swansea.
“It’s tough for the players, of course, and I can’t get into the transfer window right now, so the sooner they get paid, the faster we can move on,” Rooney said.
“We hope that the right people make the right decisions and do things for us.”
Bloodied in an aerial challenge with Jefferson Lerma early in the match, Polish midfielder Bielik emerged in an unnumbered jersey to score the decisive goal just after half an hour, reacting first after Lloyd Kelly blocked his opening header.
Bournemouth had chances at both ends of the game, but top scorer Dominic Solanke couldn’t turn from six yards with the goal at his mercy and Kelle Roos made a spectacular save to nail Kelly’s header.
“We’re a bit like Liverpool I guess,” said Jason Tindall, referring to his team having scored only five times in the last seven games.
A frenzied finale saw former English midfielder Jack Wilshere make a 12-minute debut from the bench, but back-to-back defeats left his new club four points away from automatic promotion spots.
