Dele Alli said what he must do to save Tottenham’s career with José Mourinho

Dele Alli has been urged to adapt his game to save his Tottenham career with José Mourinho.

That’s the message from Glenn Hoddle, who knows all about life as Tottenham’s creative center after 490 games for the club in a Spurs career spanning twelve years.

Hoddle is a huge fan of Dele Alli and insists he has not missed out on the Spurs.

But with the arrival of club icon Gareth Bale, Alli faces a crossroads moment where Hoddle accepts that there are still significant flaws in the England star’s overall game.

“We forget how young he is still. He’s 24, but we think that because he’s been around so long that he’s 27 or 28 and is at the peak of his career, but he’s not, he’s still learning.

Alli was criticized for his performance in the Spurs opening game

“He hasn’t lost his way, every player goes through this, but the way the Spurs are looking to play right now doesn’t suit him,” says BT expert Hoddle.

“When Mauricio Pochettino had the team, they had possession, they pressed high on the court, they hit crosses and possession in wide areas so that Dele could time his runs towards the area.

“Playing against, you don’t have a chance to time, you have to go from deep position. I’m not sure it fits.

“He and José have to talk about it and he needs to adjust his game. He struggles to hold onto the ball long enough, but he’s one of the best attacking players in midfield that you’ve ever seen.

“He will have to keep the ball better, play simple and try to break fast. Knocking down tools or moving on would be a way out.

“Don’t put down the tools, take your tools and add them. Becoming a better player in a different way and I think that’s what he will do.

“The coach chooses the teams and the way you are going to play. You have to adapt and I think he is capable of that.

“He has to tell himself ‘I’m a scoring machine’ and get into the box and he’ll score goals. He showed it when he was younger. “
