LaLiga and Ligue 1 will celebrate pre-match tributes
The top divisions of Spain and France will pay tribute to Diego Maradona before each of this weekend’s games. All matches in Spain’s first two divisions on the next round will be preceded by a minute of silence, competition organizers said in a statement. LaLiga said that the pre-game tributes will convey condolences “to his family, friends and all the fans in the world who remember him.”
Maradona spent two seasons with Barcelona, who will face Osasuna at home on Saturday, before returning to LaLiga with Sevilla in 1992. At Camp Nou, flags were flown at half-mast on Thursday, the day the 1986 World Cup winning star being buried in Argentina.
In France, Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 pre-match protocols will undergo “exceptional” changes for this weekend as a show of respect for Maradona. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) said: “At this time of great sadness for football, the LFP, the clubs and the UNFP (the French footballers’ union) wanted to place this 12th day under the star of Diego Maradona” .
