De Bruyne misses the penalty in the draw – Ghana football latest news, live scores, results

Kevin de Bruyne had scored his last five penalties for Manchester City, since losing to Everton in October 2016

Liverpool’s hopes of returning to the top of the Premier League were dashed as they battled for a high-quality draw at Manchester City, who paid a heavy price for Kevin de Bruyne’s missed penalty.

Reds coach Jurgen Klopp opted for an all-out attacking lineup at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with Diogo Jota in top form alongside the three established forwards of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool, who knew victory would see them overtake Leicester City and Tottenham, reaped an early payoff when Salah put them ahead from the spot in the 13th minute after Kyle Walker knocked down Mane, but City tied just after the half an hour when Gabriel Jesus turned magnificently before passing Alisson.

Pep Guardiola’s team squandered a golden opportunity to get ahead before the break when De Bruyne shot his deflected penalty after a handball was awarded against Joe Gomez after lengthy video deliberation by the assistant referee (VAR).

Both sides pressed for the winner, but it was City that grew stronger as the game progressed, Jesus sent a glorious head opportunity to leave both sides having to settle for a point.

Liverpool will be happier with a point

Klopp did not come to the Etihad to hide behind the door; Liverpool’s attacking formation that had City on the ropes for the first 20 minutes was proof of this.

In the end, however, he suspects that he will be happier with a point than Guardiola, as the Reds clearly ran out of strength in a second half when the home team seemed much more likely to snatch the winner.

This is a Liverpool team that already misses Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara, and also lost Trent Alexander-Arnold in the second half, but they still found themselves with a formidable opponent and refused to be defeated.

Even on defense, the reigning champions carry an unmistakable air of threat in the form of those attackers, notably Salah and Mane, who were always on the lookout.

Liverpool, unusually, became more sloppy in possession as the game progressed, but they still managed to limit City’s chances.

Klopp will never be completely satisfied with a point, but he will surely remain satisfied because his team showed real defensive endurance, aside from that moment in the second period when Jesús slipped the shackle and headed Ferran Torres’s center.

Liverpool are third in the Premier League, one point behind Leicester, and will face the Foxes at Anfield after the international break.
