David Seaman offers a theory on why Arsenal are fighting Mikel Arteta

David Seaman believes an attack of confidence is hampering Arsenal with Mikel Arteta, and feels the Gunners boss needs to be backed up in the January transfer window to help move the club forward.

Arsenal are on a depressing streak of just one win in their last nine Premier League games, six of which have been losses, but won a point against Southampton on Wednesday.

Boss Arteta is now under increasing pressure to change his team’s season, and Seaman feels that a little faith in his own abilities can go a long way for Arsenal.

He said talkSPORT : “We all know how good Arsenal can be, especially the way they play with one touch, two touches, that’s what they are known for, those hidden passes between defenders.

“At the moment it is not happening. It is a huge lack of confidence. I wish the [Southampton] the result is going to put pressure on them a bit because if I’m honest, it really can’t get any worse. “

Arsenal struggled to regain their level against the Saints after Theo Walcott’s opener, when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended their 11-game league drought without a goal to equal.

That blow will have made the Gunners captain’s confidence limitless, although the same cannot be said for the red card shown to Granit Xhaka against Burnley, who may now be facing the end of his career at Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners have been hungry for title glory for a while, but things could be turning as a new Arsenal team chart a course for success.

“The thing is, a lot of the team was under Arsene Wenger and it was under Unai Emery, so he doesn’t have his own team yet. But the club must back him in that because we can all see that we still need players.
