Marc Cucurella, captain of the Spanish Under-21 team, enjoys life at Getafe and believes that his transfer experiences have helped him develop as a player. Cucurella is a product of the Barcelona quarry, but he could not break into the first team at the Camp Nou and spent time on loan at Eibar, then at Getafe, before the latter bought him for 10 million euros in summer.
“Due to circumstances beyond my control, I could not demonstrate what I can do in Barcelona,” Cucurella told Radio MARCA. “But that has allowed me to develop in Eibar and Getafe.” Staying in Barcelona was not up to me. If i have the chance [to go back] one day … we’ll see.
“Clearly the style in Getafe is different from that of La Masia. But adapting to [Jose] Bordalas’ game has made me grow and that is positive for me. “Having different things in my locker gives me an advantage.” The 22-year-old feels well-adjusted to the style of play at the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez and is focused on making up for last season’s disappointment when Getafe narrowly lost European football.
An important player in Spain’s U21
“We have been at Getafe for a few good years,” continues Cucurella. “The style suits me well and last season was a bit heartbreaking, we want to finish this one well.”
Currently captain of the Spanish Under-21 team, Cucurella hopes to one day be able to move to Luis Enrique’s La Roja team. “It’s difficult to get in and there are a lot of good players,” Cucurella said.
“And I treat the national team as an extra and if Luis Enrique calls me, I will enjoy it and learn from it.” Cucurella is one of many players on Luis de la Fuente’s under-21 team who plays regularly in LaLiga Santander football and his lucky boxers have recently attracted attention. “My partner bought me the Simpsons boxers,” Cucurella joked, “and at first I wasn’t sure but I scored a goal in preseason, I put them back on and scored. They have become my lucky pair!”
