The outstanding performance of the 29-year-old in the year analyzed has earned him the award
Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew has been voted 2019 Footballer of the Year by the Ghana Sports Writers Association (Swag).
The forward beat out competition from Arsenal’s new signing Thomas Partey and China-based midfielder Mubarak Wakaso at the event in Accra on Saturday night.
Currently at Ghana’s camp for the October international friendly matches against Mali and Qatar, the center forward received his award from the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku, in Turkey.
The award recognizes the most prominent Ghanaian footballer practicing abroad.
“Thank you Swag Ghana! I am honored and grateful to receive the Swag award for Foreign Footballer of the Year,” Ayew posted on social media.

The former Olympique de Marseille player succeeds last year’s award winner Partey, who was also in contention for this year’s award.
Swag gong is Ayew’s latest honor after she won three at the Crystal Palace End of Season Awards in July following an excellent campaign at the club.
In his second year with the Eagles, the 29-year-old recorded nine goals in 37 Premier League appearances to help the club finish the season 14th.
His scoring run earned him the club’s two-season top scorer award, as well as being named the club’s Player of the Season and Player of the Season.
This season, however, he has yet to find the back of the net after four rounds of matches.
Ayew also scored two goals for Ghana at the 2019 African Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.
On Friday, the forward was in action as Ghana succumbed to a disappointing 3-0 loss to Mali in a friendly match.
He will hope to record his first goal of the 2020-21 period in any competition when the Black Stars face 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar in a second friendly game on Monday.
Elsewhere at Saturday’s Swag Awards, Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Felix Annan was voted the most outstanding player on the national scene.
Ghana’s female captain Elizabeth Addo won the award for best footballer of the year.
The awards gala was delayed until October due to the coronavirus outbreak.
