Information Minister Mr. Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah says the government was considering legal options to enforce the personal preventive label as part of measures to stop the spread of the Coronavirus disease (Covid-19).
He said that legal options, when implemented, would ensure that people strictly adhere to personal preventive protocols, which include the use of face masks.
At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, May 14, Oppong-Nkrumah said the government was also in talks with various stakeholders to implement post-restriction measures to ensure the safety of citizens.
On March 15, President Akufo-Addo imposed several restrictions as part of measures to control the spread of the Coronavirus disease.
The restrictions included a ban on social gatherings, the closure of borders and schools, and a partial closure of Accra, Kumasi and Kasoa.
However, the partial closure, which lasted three weeks, was lifted on April 19, while the ban on social gatherings lasted until the end of May.
According to the Minister of Information, “the government anticipates that in the coming weeks it will have to outline a gradual plan for the post-restrictions era. Accordingly, the President has begun engaging with various stakeholders in security measures that can allow for the relief of restrictions without compromising the health of the population.
“It has already engaged with the Ghana Industries Association in possible measures for safety in the workplace. The industry has offered some measures that may be mandatory in the workplace and these measures are currently under consideration.
“The president also began engaging with the educational community about possible post-restriction measures that will allow schools to reopen while protecting students, teachers and non-teaching staff,” he added.
“The sports community has also put forward proposals on a possible relaxation approach that could still protect the population. Faith-based organizations have also put forward proposals on how religious activities could be re-allowed while protecting the population, ”he said.
Oppong-Nkrumah added that President Akufo-Addo had also engaged with the transportation sector on how to ensure greater compliance and safety in more public transportation.
He added that “there are also legal options that are also being considered to ensure a stricter application of the personal preventive label, including the use of a mask.”
“Hopefully those legal options are announced like this,” he said.
While expressing his appreciation to the various stakeholders, Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah noted, however, that “the fact that you are involved does not mean that the proposals that have arisen from you have been accepted or that the restrictions have been changed or currently raised. “
“The restrictions remain in place and criminals will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
