School closings
It will be recalled that all universities, SHS, basic schools, both private and public, were closed in March after the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.
However, JHS and SHS seniors were exempt from the directive and had to stay in school and adhere to prescribed social distancing protocols while preparing for their exams in May and June 2020, respectively.
On August 30, President Akufo-Addo, in his 16th address to the nation on measures taken to control the spread of the coronavirus disease, announced that JHS and SHS in their second year (Form 2) would resume on the 5th October 2020, to complete the 2019/20 academic year.
The president directed that the JHS would operate with a class size of 30, while the SHS would operate with a class size of 25.
He added that students would be in school for 10 weeks to study and write their end-of-term exams.
President Akufo-Addo further noted that before reopening, all schools would be fumigated and disinfected.
He said that as part of the measures to control the spread of the Coronavirus, all students would receive reusable face masks, as was done for JHS and SHS seniors who reported to the school earlier in the year.
The two JHS students will also receive a hot meal a day.
“SHS 2 students in pensions must return to their different dormitories on October 5, while day students, fully respecting COVID-19 protocols, will travel from home to their respective schools on the same date. Before the reopening, all middle and high schools will be fumigated and disinfected, “said President Akufo-Addo.
“As was the case for college seniors, JHS and SHS students, all JHS 2 and SHS 2 students, as well as all teaching and non-teaching staff, will receive reusable face masks. Each school will have Veronica Buckets, gallons of liquid soap, rolls of tissue paper, thermometers, and 200-milliliter containers of sanitizer. JHS 2 students will receive one hot meal a day. “
