The government has ordered security agencies to enforce security protocols in the country, especially the use of face masks, and to repress people who violate the precautionary protocol.
The move is due to the recent increase in Covid-19 cases registered in the country during the last month, with active cases increasing from 398 to 1,156 as of November 5.
Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah reiterated calls on the country’s security agencies to ensure compliance with the protocols, urging citizens to also take responsibility for protecting themselves from the virus.
“We will reiterate a call to security agencies and managers, particularly in closed places, to ensure that at least the use of masks is complied with. All of us, as citizens, have a responsibility to ensure that other parties [like washing of hands and using a sanitizer] they are taken into consideration, ”he said.
His comments follow those of the Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, who noted that data from one report suggests that the total number of people still wearing masks has decreased.
According to him, although there is an increase in the correct use of masks, more than 70 percent of the Ghanaians surveyed still do not use masks.
“The survey reveals that those who wear masks correctly went from 44% to 10%, but in some areas, it was as low as 5%. We’ve also seen that people who don’t wear masks at all have moved up to 72%. And then the people who wore masks but did not use them correctly had refused, which means that people have learned to use the mask. “
Meanwhile, the Information Minister, supported by the GHS Director General, has refuted claims that political activities are the cause of the increase in Covid-19 cases.
He maintains that markets and workplaces are responsible for the increase and called for them to be well managed in that regard.
“The number of new registered cases has literally doubled in the month of October. If you compare it with the data on the use of masks … the observation is that this peak at the end of October, [which the data shows is mostly concentrated in the Greater Accra Region] It is seriously as a result of non-compliance with the preventive protocol for the use of the mask ”, he said.
