Ghana’s Sports Minister Isaac Kwame Asiamah has revealed that football is likely to return with fans in the various stadiums as the government continues to implement measures to ensure the sport’s safe return.

Soccer activities in the countries, including all contact sports, have been suspended in the West African country due to the coronavirus pandemic since March this year. The suspension prompted the Ghana Federation to cancel Ghana’s 2019/20 soccer season due to the pandemic.

The Akufo-Addo-led government continues to ease its restrictions on certain sectors of the economy and social life, but has yet to lift the ban on soccer.

According to the Sports Minister, measures have been put in place to ensure that COVID-19 safety protocols are met, which will allow for the safe return of all contact sports, including soccer.

“Recently, the president spoke about the measures we are implementing to control the coronavirus. I beg you, God willing, the protocols that we are working on will ensure that the president speaks again and football recovers,” said Mr. Asiamah he said (comments translated into English from Twi).

“The paramount in the protocols will be the safety of the supporters, the supporters are very important to the government. The supporters make the game beautiful, so they must be protected.

“It will not be long, football will recover with the measures that we are going to put in place. However, all those who love the game must be protected, that is very vital.”

The Ghana Football Association is engaging the government on the possibility of starting the Ghana 2020/21 football season in October amid the pandemic.
