Barcelona starts 2021 with bad news, as Philippe Coutinho will be out for about three months.
The Brazilian suffered a knee injury in the 1-1 draw against Eibar that will now require surgery.
This is a more long-lasting injury for the Catalans, in addition to those suffered by Gerard Piqué and Ansu Fati.
As a result of this injury, Coutinho will miss the knockout round of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.
Philippe Coutinho’s left knee injury is bad news for Barcelona as Ronald Koeman has lost another first-team player, but could end up saving the Catalan club a lot of money.
As part of the terms of his 2018 transfer from Liverpool, Barcelona were required to pay the English team an additional € 20 million after the Brazilian’s 100th appearance with the club.
However, he has only played 90 games so far and is now facing several months after his knee surgery.
It seemed like an easy clause to reach, but Coutinho still hasn’t done it after spending last year on loan and after suffering this injury.
His transfer was worth 120 million euros plus 40 million euros in add-ons, of which 15 million have already been paid. They were 5 million euros for qualifying for the Champions League in the first two seasons and 5 million euros more for reaching 25 games.
Coutinho, who has a contract with the club until 2023, is expected to return at the end of April and there will not be many games left after that date.
