Antonio Conte was more critical than ever after a 3-0 win at Sassuolo. ‘Nothing is easy at Inter, people are eager to throw mud at us. The responsibility is to share, not to let a coach or player drown ”.
The coach wanted his team to be more determined and fierce in their pressure, and it certainly showed here in the first 15 minutes, when they went 2-0 up at the Mapei Stadium.
Alexis Sánchez pounced on a defensive error, then Vlad Chiriches accidentally converted an Arturo Vidal cross into his own net.
Finally, despite Sassuolo dominating possession, Roberto Gagliardini added a third goal for Inter.
“We always try to do our best, sometimes it works better than others, sometimes the results are not so positive, but we always give 100 percent,” Conte told Sky Sport Italia.
“Inertia can go one way or another, the important thing is to leave the field with a shirt soaked with sweat.”
Conte was asked about changing his midfield, putting Nicolò Barella ahead of midfield rather than using a trequartista behind the forwards.
“I have not changed anything at all,” he insisted. “Let’s say we prepare the game in a certain way, since we respect our opponents. Barella played in front of defense for the first time, but needed to advance in certain situations.
“We respect the characteristics of Sassuolo and in the end we took home an impressive victory.”
Conte was asked if this was Inter’s best performance of the season and his response was irritable and immediate.
“Absolutely not. It is our best result of the season, but other performances have been much better. The result tends to affect the judgment of the performances.
“If we talk about fury and determination, then maybe it was for the best, but if we talk about the quality of football, then it is a different matter. The ideal is to combine these two elements.
“The games change, the characteristics of the opposition change, and we must be prepared to adapt to any situation. As for today, we have studied Sassuolo carefully and I congratulate my players, because in Inter it is not easy, in general.
“Nothing is easy here. Inter is a club where people can’t wait to throw negativity at us. We must be hermetically sealed and not let in anything from the outside, especially those who can’t wait to throw mud on us or worse.
“I have worked in big clubs before, but seeing this negativity and determination to beat Inter at all costs is difficult for anyone. We must use it as additional motivation to do our best ”.
This seemed very similar to what Conte said at the end of last season, when he practically threatened to leave because there was no ‘protection’ from the club.
“I always say that responsibility is shared. I said some things three months ago, it wasn’t exactly ancient history. In positive and negative times, responsibility and credit must be shared equally.
“If things go wrong, you can’t blame all the blame on the coach and the players. A change of coach is a solution, not the only one. If there is a boat in stormy water, it is necessary that all hands are on deck to stabilize the boat, not let the coach or some players fall overboard to drown.
Does Conte feel that he is firmly in command?
“I hope so. I hope so.”
