Mercy Asiedu and her husband, Nana Agyeman Badu Dua I gifted 300 acres of land to the government
There is confusion among film industry stakeholders in the Ashanti region about the exact location for the construction of the National Film Village by the government.
The National Film Village construction sites are Kunsu in the southern Ahafo Ano district, Hemang, and the eastern Sekyere district, all in the Ashanti region.
Kunsu chief Nana Agyeman Badu Dua I, who is the husband of actress Mercy Asiedu, promised to donate 250-300 acres of land to the government in Kunsu for the construction of the film village.
Reports suggest that the traditional rulers of Hemang and Sekyere have also given free land to the government.
However, some members of the Ghana Film Producers Association (FIPAG) in Kumasi have threatened to embark on a series of anti-government demonstrations if the film village in Kunsu is not built.
Isaac Ofori Brempong (K. Obuorba Production), Mawuli Ekpe Peter (National FIPAG PRO), Nana Yaw Kusi (Nayak Films), Richard Sarkodie (Osoode Ventures), Joseph Serebour (Peace Films Production), Emmanuel Sarpong (Sards Multimedia Production), Abu Habib Banda (AH Banda Film Production) and many others are among those threatening to demonstrate.
According to FIPAG PRO, Mawuli Ekpe Peter, after several consultations between the association and the Minister of Creative Arts, were assured that the government will build the film village in Kunsu.
“We are not happy with the government’s decision to move the construction of a film village from Kunsu to Sekyere. Apart from Kunsu, we are not going to allow the government to build the movie village anywhere in Ghana. We are the industry players and we know where the film village will come in handy. The government should listen to our concerns so that the construction of a movie village is useful, ”he told Pure FM in an interview.
Meanwhile, the Creative Forum, Ashanti is also demanding that the government through Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture, Ms. Barbara Oteng Gyasi, make the exact location of the film village public.
The group led by Mr. Austin Woode at a press conference on Wednesday 16 September 2020, said: “We would like the Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts to formally pronounce on the decision made on where to build the film village and give industry players, compelling reasons why a particular area was selected over the other 2.
This announcement should include clear timelines for the project so that we can all properly track the progress of the work. We request these official statements to put an end to the disputes that have involved some industry players regarding this matter. “
Creative Arts Minister Barbara Oteng Gyasi is reported to be visiting the Ashanti region on Friday, September 18, 2020 for further deliberation.
