CODEO educates Manya Krobo communities about electoral crimes

In each election year, there are some outbreaks of election-related crime due to a large number of factors that citizens are not even aware of.

In this context, the Coalition of National Election Observers (CODEO) has educated members of the Odumase community in the Manya Krobo district on issues related to electoral crimes.

Mr. Francis Nyavoi of CODEO pointed out that most people were ignorant of electoral crimes and therefore indulged in them to create tension and therefore awareness to educate the community about crimes and related sanctions.

Speaking in a debate organized by the National Civic Education Commission (NCCE) and the Justice and Peace Commission, for aspiring parliamentarians in the area, he mentioned the defacement of posters, the destruction of ballot boxes and even the exchange of words with officials elections in polling stations, such as some of the crimes sanctioned by law.

He explained that the commission of such crimes could carry a fine of 500 units of punishment equivalent to GH ¢ 6,000.00 or two years in prison, and recommended that everyone desist from such crimes to ensure a peaceful election.

Mr. Nyavoi pointed out that heated discussions often led to various offenses from supporters of different political divisions and urged young people to avoid any situation that could generate tension and violence in the run-up to the elections.

On the voting process, he noted that the EC over the years had registered a large number of rejected ballots and educated the electorate on how to avoid thumb printing on the lines and advised them to check the validation stamps at the ballot papers, which would be issued for voting, to avoid rejection of the ballots.

He begged everyone to come out in his number to vote on Election Day so that their voices would count who represented them in Parliament and who became their president, amid observing the coronavirus protocols.
