A six-member delegation from the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations working in the area of governance has asked the President of Parliament to explore ways in which Parliament and Civil Society can collaborate effectively to advance the agenda of democratic development of the country.
The delegation was led by the Executive Director of the Star Ghana Foundation, Ibrahim Tanko, who, while congratulating the Spokesperson on his election, recalled the many projects undertaken by Civil Society Organizations and Parliament in the past and expressed hope for more collaborative efforts in the future.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Rashid Draman, outlined seven key issues on which Civil Society expects Parliament to work quickly. These include strengthening the Parliamentary Training Institute, strengthening Parliament’s Legislative Drafting Unit, review of consensus building on Rules of Procedure in Parliament, and negotiations and mediation in Parliament.
Spokesperson Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin emphasized that one of the key things he seeks to do during his tenure as spokesman is to create and maintain a bipartisan Parliament that will work to maintain a balance of power between the various arms of government.
The speaker also emphasized the need for Members to work closely together, building consensus and putting the country first in all their deliberations and actions.
