CK Akonnor won his first match as Ghana’s coach on his second attempt, as the Black Stars defeated Qatar 5-1 in a friendly played on Monday, October 12, 2020.
The former Ghana captain, who was named in January this year, engineered a match that destroyed the reigning Asian champions in Antalya, Turkey.
Akonnor came under fire when he lost his first match in charge against Mali, a 3-1 setback, three days before the Qatar game.
He made five changes and that was very effective as the Black Stars produced a choppy performance.
Brentford ace Tariqe Fosu opened the scoring in the 21st minute, but Qatar leveled just before the half-time whistle.
Captain Andre Ayew restored Ghana’s lead in the 63rd from close range after intercepting a Thomas Party shot on target.
Two minutes later, winger Samuel Owusu sneaked into the rear of the Qatar defense after a perfectly weighted pass from Partey to shoot into the net to make it 3-1.
In the 83rd minute, Swansea City talisman Andre secured his second personal and Ghana’s fourth before substitute Caleb Ekuban made his fifth.
Ghana will play Sudan in a double game in November when the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers resume.
