DAVID TAMAKLOE FREE TO CELEBRATE EASTER WITH YOUR FAMILY

Yesterday it became known that Mr. David Tamakloe was arrested by some unidentified security agents, supposedly from National Security.

The Rambo-style approach to arresting citizens has been of concern to many.

It is a surprise that nothing seems to be changing in this regard. It was reported that Mr. Tamakloe was detained at gunpoint sometime yesterday.

And particularly, on the eve of Good Friday, knowing very well that he would be kept in police custody until after Monday, is most inhumane, unacceptable, backward and smells of abuse of police powers.

A colleague lawyer, who followed up on the matter at the police station, said that the officers could not explain the reasons for their arrest. Simply none, and yet he has been deliberately denied the police investigation.

It is important that our security operates on the basis of transparency and with a certain sense of integrity. The image of security agencies continues to decline over the years following the arbitrary and inexplicable arrests of innocent citizens.

Sacrificing professionalism at the altar of political expediency and making security a tool for political manipulation would do everyone a lot of harm.

Mr. David Tamakloe, the editor of WhatsApp News, was similarly arrested a couple of months ago without justification.

The state should not be seen as wasting its powers arbitrarily. The state, instead of abusing its powers, is expected to protect the rights and freedoms of its citizens. The consistent acts of picking up individuals without cause must cease now. The rule of law does not mean the rule of a few. It means acting in accordance with our laws and not in accordance with our whims and whims.

In this statement, I urge the IGP to order that Mr. Tamakloe be released on bail for a police investigation so that he can meet with his family at Easter and that if any prima facie determination is made after the Easter festivities, can be duly prosecuted in court to take steps to defend yourself in the matter.

Martin Luther King warned that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Let us be guided.
