A group calling itself Innovative Teachers has asked the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the government’s acquisition of laptops.
President Akufo-Addo announced in his state of the nation address that the government will purchase some 280,000 TM1 laptops for teachers to increase their work.
“I am pleased to announce that the government is facilitating the acquisition of 280,000 laptops for members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) this year. . ”
“I recognize that the teacher is at the center of any reform in the field of education,” added the president.
Under the agreement, the government will pay 70% of the cost of 1,550 GHS and teachers will pay 30% through deductions from their salaries.
But the founder of Innovative Teachers says they perceive corruption in the acquisition of laptops.
Group leader Stephen Desu said they believe prices have been inflated.
“We notified you of a complaint and we are invoking the original jurisdiction of the CHRAJ to investigate alleged acts of corruption. Our suspicions are based on the fact that we are producing 280,000 laptops and it would have been thought that the figure should have come with some level of relief for the taxpayer in terms of the cost and 30% to pay for teachers. Therefore, we believe that the cost of 1,550 GHS is high. So we suspect that the cost has been inflated. “He said.
