Lewis Baines scored Chorley’s winning goal against Peterborough

National League North Chorley surprised League One Peterborough with a magical turnaround at the FA Cup at London Road to advance to the third round.

Connor Hall managed a draw for the visitors at the hour mark, taking advantage of a flat-footed Peterborough defense.

And three minutes later Lewis Baines finished off a clever corner routine to complete a famous upset for the team that is second from the bottom in the sixth tier.

Jack Taylor had crushed the League One winger ahead in two minutes, knocking home a fumble from a corner kick, but they ended up coming out 89 spots below them in the pyramid of English football.

Relive the Peterborough Massacre at the Chorley FA Cup

Chorley’s Harry Cardwell could have made it 3-1, but his penalty was stopped by Posh goalkeeper Christy Pym after Mark Beevers dragged the forward into the box.

The part-time workers, however, held on to produce a famous commotion from Darren Ferguson’s side.

Another slaughter of giants

Chorley, who stunned the former Wigan Athletic winner 3-2 after overtime in the first round, entered this tie without ever having progressed beyond the second round of the FA Cup.

The Lancashire team had only beaten Football League opponents in the cup three times in their history, while Peterborough had advanced to the third round 14 times out of their last 15 campaigns.

But despite conceding within 120 seconds against a Posh team that made only one change since their last league game, Chorley was always in the game, hitting the wood twice in the first half.

Striker Cardwell hit the right post in the 27th minute, with a fierce blow on the half turn. And winger Elliot Newby rocked the left back moments before halftime after a superb individual run.

Led by director Jamie Vermiglio, the part-time players outperformed their rivals and deservedly took the lead in the second half.

The hosts, second in League One, created few chances at the end despite having a lifeline after Cardwell’s failed pitch.

Siriki Dembele forced a good save from Chorley goalkeeper Matthew Urwin in injury time was the only notable response, as Chorley held on to reach Monday’s draw and guarantee a club out of the league in the third round.
