Olivier Giroud saved Chelsea’s blush with a poacher’s shot in injury time to secure a 2-1 Champions League win in Rennes.
Callum Hudson-Odoi’s crisp finish saw the Blues win 1-0 for most of their Group E clash in France, only for Serhou Guirassy to tie in the end for Rennes.
But just as West Londoners were beginning to mourn a series of missed opportunities, the ever-reliable Giroud appeared to return home and regain victory.
However, Frank Lampard’s work is never done and the Chelsea manager is likely to return to the market in January, either to design expenses or plan a new arrival to further bolster his squad in search of a Premier League title.
Chelsea’s youngster points to a Champions League club
Chelsea youngster Ike Ugbo is targeting a Champions League club if he is forced to leave the Blues permanently.
Ugbo, 22, is currently on loan to Belgian Cercle Brugge, where he has scored seven impressive goals in just 10 games.
Speaking to The Athletic, Ugbo confirmed that his goal is still a place in Chelsea’s first team, but if that is not possible his ambition would be to reach a Champions League club.
“The ambition is to play in the first team, but if that doesn’t work, the best option, the next step, is to join a club where I can settle down,” he said.
“Sometimes you get to a point where you can use your qualities elsewhere.
“I’m 22 years old and you don’t want to leave it too long, where you don’t want to be sent to a new club every year.
“You want to settle in a place because that is when you will feel comfortable, your football can go well.
“My goal is to play for a team in the Champions League. One day I will get there. I think I rushed before, to try to get to that stage as soon as possible.
“Now I am more mature, learning different ways to score goals, to be a more complete striker.”
Chelsea target ‘to consider offers’
Anel Ahmedhodzic’s agent has confirmed that Malmo will listen to offers for the player this winter.
The 21-year-old has been in good shape for Malmo this season and that has seen the Bosnian international attract the interest of Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Ajax and Chelsea, according to SportSport.ba.
There has been talk that Malmö was willing to hang on to the defender, but his agent Markus Rosenborg has confirmed that the Swedish team will listen to offers for him.
“The interest is enormous. Almost daily people write about Anel and it is no secret that there are always new clubs calling him, ”said Rosenborg.
“They don’t necessarily have to be clubs, but agents or people who deal with transfers or are intermediaries for some teams.
“Anel has it all. Of course, he can still learn a lot, but if you look at the important qualities: he is young, tall, built, has technique and a good overview. Has it all.
“Anel has to go to a club where he can fully flourish, somewhere where he doesn’t end up in the bank.
“All the clubs have been following Anel for a long time and they know why they want to bring him. During the winter holidays, we will listen to the various offers we receive.”
London couple ready for the Battle of Giroud
West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur are considering an offer for Olivier Giroud, according to reports.
The Frenchman has been on the sidelines of Chelsea’s first team this season and that has led him to publicly admit that he may be forced to leave Stamford Bridge in search of regular opportunities.
West Ham and Tottenham are said to be interested suitors according to a report by Calcio Mercato, as the pair weigh a move for Giroud.
It would not be the first time Giroud has crossed London to change clubs, as his career in England began with Arsenal.
A report from Semper Inter recently claimed that Giroud could be available for as little as € 5 million (£ 4.4 million) in January.
