Chelsea fans react to Mount-Kante-Havertz’s midfield performance against Krasnodar

Frank Lampard’s decision to change his system in the second half against Krasnodar worked very well, as Chelsea outscored the Russian team four times after struggling from the start.

The Chelsea manager started the game with his favorite 4-2-3-1, with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic serving as double pivot behind Kai Havertz.

Facing an exhausted Krasnodar struggling with injuries, Chelsea often struggled to get the ball out of their own half in the first 45 minutes despite having 79% possession.

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea had just three shots on goal in the first half and were lucky enough to lead 1-0 at halftime.

The lead was due to a questionable goalkeeper from Krasnodar’s Safonov, who allowed Callum Hudson-Odoi’s shot to pass over him for the winger’s first goal in the Champions League.

However, it wasn’t until the 71st minute, when Lampard made three changes, that the flow of the game really turned in Chelsea’s favor. Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, and Christian Pulisic were sent to Jorginho, Kovacic, and Hudson-Odoi.

That allowed for a change to 4-3-3, with Kante as the sole defensive midfielder and Mount and Kai Havertz as number eight up front.

Chelsea added three more goals after the change and suddenly seemed comfortable in the transition.

The combination of Mount, Kante and Havertz enjoyed similar success when Chelsea came back from three goals against in September to draw with West Brom.

And Chelsea fans want to see more of this midfield three in the future.
