Chelsea could make a move for the Atlético de Madrid midfielder and Arsenal are targeting Thomas Partey as an alternative to Declan Rice’s main target.
According to The Guardian, there has been a new twist in Thomas Partey’s transfer saga as Chelsea have now set their sights on the Atlético de Madrid midfielder. It basically means that both London’s rivals Arsenal and Chelsea could be involved in an interesting transfer duel for the player as we head into the final stages of the transfer window.
Partey has been linked to a move to the Emirates all summer, with Mikel Arteta apparently desperate to sign a new containment midfielder. The Spaniard does not favor the current Arsenal duo of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, but unfortunately the Gunners have struggled to meet Atletico Madrid’s € 50 million demands for the star midfielder.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have no intention of ending their spending spree this summer, with Frank Lampard still open to replacing Jorginho. Incidentally, the Italian number six has been linked to a surprising move to Arsenal this week, while the Blues themselves have been interested in West Ham United star Declan Rice.
However, the Hammers have done a great job keeping their containment midfielder and it seems unlikely that the English international will switch to Stamford Bridge this summer. As a result, Chelsea has now turned his attention to Partey.
The Ghanaian international still faces an uncertain future in the Spanish capital after months of speculation about his future. He has appeared in all three Atlético de Madrid games this season, but could still be coming off the Wanda Metropolitano during the final days of the transfer market.
At Chelsea, the 27-year-old could offer better defensive coverage and a better pace of work compared to Jorginho. Ultimately, he could help provide more solidity for the team, which has faced much criticism for its vulnerability at the back, having already conceded six goals in four games so far this season.
Arsenal, on the other hand, could really use a viable alternative to the midfield duo of Dani Ceballos and Granit Xhaka. Arteta has done well to include Mohamed Elneny in his first-team plans, but he could really use the services of a quality executor like Thomas, who could certainly help the Gunners be more solid off the ball.
Arsenal have also had to end their search for Houssem Aouar and it looks like they could end the summer without any other additions to midfield. So it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga takes shape in the next few hours, before the transfer window closes.
