Chelsea in the market for a new defender in the summer
According to Matt Law of the Telegraph via Daily CFCChelsea could be in the market for a new defender this summer.
The Blues signed Thiago Silva for free and the Brazilian has consolidated the Blues’ rearguard this season.
The Brazilian veteran has formed a formidable alliance with Kurt Zouma and is the club’s first-choice defensive partner. However, set to turn 37 this year, Silva is not a long-term option.
While Chelsea have three other central defenders on their roster, their position at the club is suspect. Andreas Christensen is the third choice center-back, while Antonio Rudiger and Fikayo Tomori round out the numbers.
Christensen and Rudiger’s contracts expire in the summer of 2022. It makes sense for the club to change them in the summer and reinvest the money to bring in suitable replacements.
Meanwhile, Tomori is highly respected and could still have a future at Chelsea. It is promoted that the 23-year-old will be on loan this January. Regular playtime elsewhere will boost his development which has stalled a bit.
Law also confirmed that the Blues have the option to extend Silva’s contract for one more year. Given the impact it has had, it will be well deserved.
A long-term option!
One defender who will be available in the summer is Dayot Upamecano. According to The Guardian, the RB Leipzig ace is set to watch the rest of the season in Germany before moving on to the end of the season.
The Blues are among a large number of clubs interested in the services of 22 years. It would surely be an improvement over the defensive cast we have today. It remains to be seen if the club will do anything for him.
