The opposition Democratic National Congress has accused the Electoral Commission of racking up votes in various polling stations to help President Akufo-Addo win the 2020 elections.
According to the party, several polling stations recorded significant vote calculation errors that favored the incumbent at the polls.
At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, displayed images of pink sheets from the Ashanti region that captured the alleged errors identified by the party.
“Ladies and gentlemen, these are just some of the pink sheets that we showed you and there are many available that we are willing to show you any day. These figures from some areas of the Ashanti region and you can see the obvious fill of votes that saw the candidate Akufo-Addo winning everything and the candidate Mahama with deductions in the votes. And there are many of those quilts throughout the country, “he said.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Press in Accra has published the results of the 2020 presidential elections declared by Ms. Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Election Commission (EC), who is also the Return Officer for the presidential elections.
This gives legal backing to the results declared by the EC president and paves the way for any person or group of people interested in challenging it to do so in a court of law, an EC source told the Ghana News Agency. on Tuesday.
The Commission was mandated by Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127, Regulation 44, Sub-Regulation 11, to record the results in a bulletin, saying; “Without that, any individual or group case about the election results sent to court will be thrown out.”
“An instrument, which is executed under the hand of the President of the Commission and under the seal of the Commission, and states that the person named in the Instrument was declared elected as President of Ghana in the election, is prima facie evidence that the named person was elected. “
The IC indicated that the instrument referred to in sub-article 11 will be published in the Gazette.
The source said that any person or group of people interested in contesting the results had until December 30 to do so.
“It is a public announcement that indicates that there were elections and of the 12 candidates who opposed, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been duly elected as President.”
“The process is like that of a newly married woman who wants to change her maiden name to her husband’s last name. You go to the press of the Assembly and pay a fee for it to be published, ”said the source.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, was elected the eighth president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
Jean Mensa declared Mr. Akufo-Addo President-elect on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.
