Iker Casillas has said that although he was never responsible for the leak of Real Madrid dressing room information during José Mourinho’s tenure at the club, he was willing to let the Portuguese suspect that he was the culprit.
Mourinho overcame a turbulent time in the Real Madrid dressing room and Casillas even lost his place on the side, with accusations that he was a mole.
“He accused me of being a friend of the press,” Casillas recalled in the framework of a Movistar + documentary, the last episode of which focused on the relationship between the couple.
“I know people from the press, how could I not know them? But it is another thing to filter the information.
“People talked about me, but I kept quiet, didn’t respond and accepted that they saw me as the mole.
Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi – who appeared in the documentary along with Gerard Piqué – offered a defense of his former teammate in Spain.
“There was an internal war and he [Casillas] his name was mole, ”said Xavi.
“It would not have been easy to handle and I spoke to him then and he was having a very difficult time.”
Piqué, for his part, expressed his conviction that Casillas was left “unprotected” from Mourinho at Real Madrid.
