Karim Benzema may keep up his good scoring numbers with Real Madrid, but he needs help as his team hasn’t scored too many goals this season. There are only 27 goals in 15 LaLiga Santander games.
However, Casemiro is doing his part. The Brazilian opened the scoring against Granada at a time when it looked especially difficult for the whites.
Similarly, he opened the scoring with his head in the recent derby against Atlético de Madrid, with both games ending 2-0.
The midfielder now has four goals in total this season, with only Benzema, who has 12, ahead.
In addition to the aforementioned two goals, Casemiro also achieved the crucial draw in the 2-2 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach. That was a goal that prompted Real Madrid’s Champions League revival and qualification as group champion.
Only his goal in the 2-1 loss to Alavés did not earn Real Madrid a point.
Even as he ages, Casemiro remains vitally important to Zinedine Zidane. Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Fede Valverde are also adding minutes in midfield and have also been scoring goals this season, but nobody can do that in addition to providing the defensive strength that Casemiro offers.
Against Granada, he even fell so deep at times as to be between the two centers, helping at one end of the field and scoring at the other.
“We want to keep this hot streak going, but now is a moment of rest,” Casemiro said after Wednesday night’s victory when speaking with Movistar.
“There is a long way to go in the title race, but I hope we can maintain our good form.”
Real Madrid now have a week off before visiting Elche in LaLiga Santander next Wednesday. It’s a rare full week off and heavily used players like Casemiro will appreciate it more than most.
