Jamie Carragher is alarmed by Liverpool’s recent form after their loss at Southampton and says they won’t win the league if they don’t sign a center-back in January.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds lost 1-0 to Southampton and Manchester United had a chance to go three points clear at the top of the Premier League if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side beat Burnley in their game next week.
Liverpool selected captain Jordan Henderson as makeshift center midfielder in Monday night’s loss at St Mary’s, but Carragher says Klopp’s team won’t be champions if they don’t sign in this month’s transfer window.
Carragher told Sky Sports after the Southampton game: ‘I can’t see Liverpool winning the league if they don’t buy a center-back.
I said that after the Everton game when (Virgil) van Dijk got injured, but I think it’s a very difficult question if they don’t bring anyone in.
“The fact that they played Jordan Henderson as a central defender is not going to do much for the two guys on the bench (Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips) and their confidence if they have two midfielders playing there. Henderson is not a center-back. He did well, but it’s not his job. ‘
Liverpool have star defender Van Dijk sidelined with a long-term injury alongside his regular backline teammates Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.
The Merseysiders failed to bring in a defensive draft after Dejan Lovren’s summer departure, with defenders Williams and Phillips in turns to fellow midfielder Fabinho at the rear.
Meanwhile, Carragher claims Liverpool’s woes outweigh a shortage on defense as the Reds’ front row failed to deliver a decisive blow for the second consecutive Premier League game.
Liverpool were unable to get a shot on goal at St Mary’s until the 75th minute, while they also fired a shot on target in their final game in Newcastle.
Prior to this sterile streak, Klopp’s Reds also drew 1-1 against Sam Allardyce’s West Brom, who sent four at home to Arsenal on Saturday night despite the Gunners suffering their own attacking problems this season.
Carragher added: ‘I was expecting a reaction from Liverpool (tonight) in the wake of two bad performances. I think we had another. We look at Liverpool’s form as a visitor this season, it’s so poor right?
“They never seemed to score (against Southampton. Did the goalkeeper make a good save or a great save? Did anyone get a chance to score?)
“That is a real concern for Liverpool at the moment, it is not good enough.”
Former Reds defender Carragher also hit Klopp’s side for lack of urgency in the loss of Southampton, especially in the closing seconds of the game when Liverpool opted to take a short corner in injury time.
The Sky expert said: ‘Liverpool scored a lot of goals at the end of the last few years, they have forgotten how to play like this.
‘What summed it up was Liverpool’s (last) corner. They did the same against West Brom. It has to go in the box. You have to score in ten seconds, you have to enter.
“The Liverpool team is incredible, but they are going through the first bad streak in two or three seasons. Where do the goals come from?
