Jamie Carragher has strongly insisted that Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes cannot play on the same team with Manchester United.
The Frenchman was on United’s bench over the weekend, as the Red Devils drew scoreless with a midfield from Fernandes, Fred and Scott McTominay.
With new signing Donny van de Beek on the bench, as well as more defensive Nemanja Matic, it meant United were worth £ 170 million in midfielders on the bench at Old Trafford.
Carragher said on Monday Night Football that Pogba and Fernandes cannot play together and that he “does not understand” the signing of Donny van de Beek.
He said: ‘I actually admire (Ole Gunnar) Solskjaer for putting Pogba on the bench.
“I said a few weeks ago after the Crystal Palace game, Fernandes and Pogba is not a midfield that can play together and it never will be.
Van de Beek, I don’t understand the signing, I really don’t understand it, how he was going to play or where he was going to fit in.
‘As soon as he signed I thought he plays number ten, Fernandes plays there, Pogba can play there.
Actually, it’s better for the team to have Fred and McTominay there. But having Fred and McTominay isn’t enough for Manchester United to win the league either.
“The problem for me is Paul Pogba, I’ve said that for a long time. I’m with Gary (Neville), Fernandes is the man for that number ten spot, but I don’t know how Ole can’t pick a £ 90 million signing on Pogba, it’s difficult for a coach so at some point he will come back. in the team ‘.
Co-expert Neville added that Fernandes hasn’t played as well in midfield with Pogba or van de Beek.
However, he insisted it was too early to say that Fernandes and Pogba cannot play on the same team.
“Ole has had six months to get Pogba and Fernandes together,” said the former Manchester United defender.
‘I don’t think they have been in the position that they have played together so much, so we can rule it out now. If United’s results don’t improve with both of them on the team, then that’s fair enough, but it’s too early.
Bruno, when he’s with Fred and McTominay, when they’re playing together, they haven’t lost a game. I think Ole looked at it this week and said let’s get back to basics, I know these three can play together.
“We were a disaster before the international break giving opportunities to the left, the right and the center. Defeated 6-1 at home by Tottenham, lost to comfortable looking Crystal Palace, Brighton away we were lucky. He thought we need to have a point guard and he’s done it with those three players in midfield. ”
