Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has stated that it is difficult for Real Madrid fans to admit that Lionel Messi is the best player in football history.
Puyol, who is now 42, retired in 2014 after having played 593 first-team games for the Catalan giants and winning 100 games for the Spanish national team.
Puyol was a stone at the heart of the Catalan club’s defense for 15 seasons and was teammates with the Argentine star in eight of those campaigns.

The Barcelona news in recent months has been defined by this year’s Messi news because the club’s captain had been looking for a way out, although the club held firm to its future last summer.
This week, Messi scored his 644th goal for Barcelona, beating the record set by Pelé with Santos, to continue his remarkable record throughout his career.
Puyol said in an interview with Goal.com, between Marca quotes: “I understand that it is difficult for a Real Madrid player to admit that he is the best, it is an opinion like any other, but his goals are there and that is objective data.
“We have been fortunate to have been able to enjoy him for so long and numbers are not invented by anyone but they are proof that he is the best. Remembering the work we did together makes me very proud.
“I am sure that a Barcelona led by Leo will continue to win titles.
“In Barcelona he has already broken all the records and I don’t know if there will be someone who can compete with him in the future because he has set the bar very high.”
