Security personnel in the Northern Region capital, Tamale, have fired warning shots to disperse some people believed to be NDC sympathizers who took to the streets to celebrate.
In the midst of the burning of tires, the crowd, from different parts of the city, expressed their approval for the decision of the party’s standard-bearer, John Dramani Mahama, to reject the electoral verdict of the Electoral Commission (EC).
JoyNews sources indicate that areas such as Kalphoni, King David Junction, Fatawu Bicycles, Afa Ajura Mosque, Agric Traffic Light, the Goil station in front of Absa Bank, Kakpayili and many other places had burned tires in the middle of the street.
This was minutes after Mahama declared his unwillingness to accept the 2020 presidential and parliamentary results.
In a press conference on Wednesday, December 9, the president of the EC, Jean Mensa had declared that the standard bearer of the PNP, Nana Akufo-Addo had obtained 6,730,413 of the total of valid votes, representing 51.59% while John Mahama of the NDC had 6,214,889 47.36% of the total votes cast at the December 7 polls.
Since then, this result has been rejected by the NDC leadership and some supporters.
Supporting this position, the party’s standard-bearer, John Dramani Mahama, had questioned the credibility of the EC and rejected the Commission’s verdict.
He had also urged NDC supporters to remain calm as the leadership launches measures to overturn the election results.
Later, this led some of the party’s faithful to take to the streets to rejoice in support of their standard-bearer.
Meanwhile, the incident in Tamale has been trending on social media and many are calling for calm and peace to prevail.
