AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli says he is confident Hakan Calhanoglu will compromise his future with the Serie A team amid reports of interest from Manchester United.
Calhanoglu’s current deal expires this summer, meaning he can sign a pre-contract deal with another club in January, and United has been linked to making a move for the attacking midfielder.
The 26-year-old was on the scoreboard in Milan’s 3-2 win over Lazio on Wednesday. After the match, Pioli played down any uncertainties about his player’s future, insisting that he remains a key part of his team.
“Calha is fantastic, he’s smart, he can move well, he knows how to attack and he knows how to connect the game. He sacrifices himself, ”said the manager.
‘I want him at this level, he’s a first-rate player. I don’t think there are problems. Calha is with us and with the club. I am sure that his will is to stay, there is negotiation.
‘The club, the technical area, the player and I want the same thing, it has reached important levels and can still grow. It is a player to bet on.
Last week, reports suggested that the Turkish international’s representatives had flown to Milan and were ready to discuss new terms with the club bosses.
The club currently pays its number 10 just over £ 3 million a year, and that could rise to over £ 4 million according to reports.
Calhanoglu has established himself as one of Italy’s best creative players with 45 assists in 149 games. He has also scored 29 goals, including seven this season.
Milan are enjoying an impressive season at the top of the Serie A club and in the last 32 of the Europa League.
