James Agalga, parliamentary candidate of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) will compete with James Maurice Abakisi, candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the seat in the electoral district of Builsa Norte in the parliamentary elections on December 7, 2020.

Traditionally, the Builsa Norte electoral district had voted over the years for the NDC party.

The NDC won the seat in 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012 and 2016, except in 2004 when Madame Agnes Asangalisa Chigabatia made political history when she won the seat for the NPP in 2004 with 6,160 votes, representing 33.70% of the total. of votes cast. .

He beat his close contender, Mr. Timothy Ataboadey Awontiirim of the NDC, who got 6,147 votes, representing 33.60 percent.

The NDC regained the seat in the 2008 parliamentary elections.

Agalga, the current member of Parliament in the area, won the seat in the 2016 elections with 13,886 votes, representing 61.21%, while Thomas Kofi Alonsi, of the PNP, obtained 8,652 votes representing 38.14 %.
The Popular Conversion Party, at that time, obtained 147 polls, which represents 0.65 percent.

Generally, political activities in the constituency are slow, although the posters of the two main contestants are found in all available spaces, especially on trees and walls.

Huge billboards of applicants are also placed at strategic points throughout the constituency to attract the attention of the electorate.

Both applicants, who solicited votes from their constituents in separate interviews with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), successfully submitted their nomination forms to the Builsa Northern District Office of the Election Commission to contest the position.

The District GNA observed that the candidates had resorted to the door-to-door campaign to carry out the vote count, without mass gatherings, probably due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Abakisi, who is competing for the position for the first time, is a professor and area manager for the National Communications Authority (NCA) for the Upper East and West regions.

In a recent interview with the GNA, the applicant, who is a former director of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the then District of Builsa, indicated that “I participated in the implementation of Health Insurance in the two Districts of the land of Builsa ”.

He stressed that “I have the experience and am able to do more when given the opportunity to lead the constituency in Parliament.”

Mr. Agalga, in a separate interview, said that his tenure as a deputy for the area had brought a transformation to the people in the constituency, adding that “the people of Builsa North deserve quality and better representation in Parliament.”

The former deputy interior minister, who is also a lawyer, said the NDC Party, when again voted for the government, would ensure that all stalled projects initiated and started under the NDC would continue.
