Manchester United took time to get the £ 47m signing from Bruno Fernandes (BBC). But the Portuguese international was worth the wait.
Fernandes has already scored three goals and has provided four assists on a United jersey. And it seems to be the creative catalyst that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has been clamoring for. But the 25-year-old could also play another role at the club: that of inspiring United’s next generation.
Fernandes received tips to become the new Eric Cantona of United. The influence of the French spread to a large number of young people in the club and the new signing has similar confidence in the field.
If the next generation of the Red Devils could learn from the £ 47 million man, it’s Angel Gomes.
Doubts remain about Gomes’ future at Old Trafford, and his current contract expires this summer. Talks are ongoing about a possible extension and if the 20-year-old stays, he could have the perfect teacher in Fernandes.
The Portuguese has flourished in recent years and Gomes has the same ability on the ball and the eye for a pass. While their stature differs, they share many of the same key skills.
United fans have been desperate to see more of Gomes and if he stays his time will come. It is too good to be overlooked forever. But he also needs to develop his game and Fernandes’ playability makes him the ideal tutor.
Hopefully, Gomes secures his long-term future at United and Fernandes’ magic spreads to the young man. One day, they could both be commanding the same midfield.
