Bruno Fernandes admits Manchester United have not had a good start to the new season, but dismissed rumors of a slump with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his teammates.

Fernandes will lead United for the first time in the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night when Solskjaer’s team begins their Champions League campaign against last season’s defeated finalist Paris Saint-Germain.

It comes amid speculation that the Portugal star is losing confidence in Solskjaer and was involved in an angry exchange with his coach and other United players after he was substituted at half-time in the 6-1 loss to him. Tottenham at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Although United rallied to win at Newcastle after the international break, they have lost two of their first four Premier League games and Fernandes admits that is not good enough.

“It was not the start we wanted,” he told BT Sport. ‘It was a difficult start. We lost the first game (at home to Crystal Palace) and also the game against Tottenham.

Then everyone goes to the national team, some stay to train and everyone comes with the right spirit to give an answer. We came to Newcastle in that spirit. We have to move forward with the same mindset. ‘

However, United’s talisman denied that there is any discord with Solskjaer when referring to reports that there was a problem between the pair during the Spurs debacle.

“It was fun,” he added. ‘I don’t like these situations. It doesn’t matter much to me, but I talk about it because it’s not fair to the coach. Nobody blames the coach.

“It was pretty much the same team that went undefeated for 17 games last season, or something like that. People want to blame the coach, so I speak to clarify that nothing happened.

‘We lose 6-1, everyone must blame themselves. The problem is not one, two or three, it is the whole team. We don’t prepare well enough, we don’t play well enough and it’s everyone’s fault.

“So we came to training camp after the national team and we know we have to train hard and work better. We did that against Newcastle and I hope we do it against Paris. ‘

On reports of a locker room fight with other players, he added: ‘Nothing, you know? We lose 6-1 and nobody has anything to say.

“Of course, we see the mistakes we make, but it was good for us to have the break afterwards with the national teams.

“Everyone clarified their ideas and everyone returned from the national teams with commitment. We need to keep doing the same work we did in Newcastle to get what we need. “

Fernandes, who was Sporting Lisbon captain before joining United in January, enjoys the extra responsibility after removing the armband from the injured Harry Maguire.

“I’m the type of player who likes pressure,” he said. ‘I want to do everything under pressure. Without pressure, you are too relaxed, even if you are focused.

“You need to pressure yourself and surround yourself with people who pressure you. My family also put a lot of pressure on me, looking for the mistakes I made in order to improve each game.

There are fake friends who simply say that you are doing it right and you are doing it right. But you need people to ask for more than what you’re giving, so that you can push yourself to do your best. ‘

Fernandes also endorsed Edinson Cavani to succeed at United after pursuing his career since they played in Italy. Cavani starred for Napoli while Fernandes began his career with Novara, Udinese and Sampdoria.

The former PSG striker has stayed in Carrington to improve his form rather than face his old club on Tuesday night, but Fernandes expects great things from the Uruguayan.

“I’ve known Cavani for a long time since we played in Italy,” he said. “ He was amazing, he broke a lot of records and he did it very well. He did very well in Paris, I hope he can do the same for us.

‘He’s one of the best in the world inside the box. You can smell the goal. His mindset in training is great, he’s here to do his best and fight for his place. Watching him play 100 percent calls you to give 100 percent too. ‘
